PHP Content Management System
Three years ago I tried several popular open source content management systems (CMS's) and came away from the entire experience very dissapointed. In a nutshell, here is what I found wrong with them:
- Made by nerds for nerds... a huge learning curve requiring a user to learn a new language and unique way of interacting with the CMS.
- Required all content to be stored in a database... A great CMS
will be designed as a tool to make my life easier, not as a control
device that restricts what I can and cannot do. Sometimes the best way to bring content to the website is to write your own code and upload it.
- Extra bells and whistles (modules) had to be created especially to work with the CMS system, instead of creating a CMS that played nice with most well written code.
- Poorly designed templating systems. As a web designer skilled at html, css, js, and php I shouldn't have to learn a whole new language proprietary to some silly CMS. A template should look like html, php, css, js, and a few placeholders thrown in.
Rather than work with a deficient system, I created my own. I'm currently toying with the idea of releasing the CMS to other webdesigners that have purchased Ultimate Form Mail. A name for the CMS is pending.
Side note: A recent project for a non-profit organization required me to shop CMS systems after a three year hiatus. I am amazed to tell you that nothing much has improved in the years that have gone by. I still believe that the system I have created is far superior to anything I've seen.
Other upcoming PHP projects
I have some other VERY cool PHP projects I'm putting the finishing touches on. Some are bundled software that can be downloaded and installed on a server. Some are web based applications that will stay on my servers and help marketers increase their bottom line profits.
